[News Space=Reporter seungwon lee] Hanwha Ocean has won orders for two LNG carriers, recording the largest number of orders among domestic shipyards this year.
Hanwha Ocean (CEO Kim Hee-chul) announced that it has received an order for two LNG carriers worth 713.5 billion won from Maran Gas Maritime, a subsidiary of Angelicoussis Group, the largest shipping company in Greece. The ships will be built at the Geoje Plant in Gyeongsangnam-do and delivered to the ship owner in 2027. In particular, this contract includes an option contract for two ships, so additional orders are expected in the future.
Hanwha Ocean has received orders for 39 ships/units worth $7.87 billion this year. This is the largest order volume among domestic shipyards this year (as of now) based on individual shipyards. This is the result of a selective order strategy focused on high value-added products such as LNG carriers.
This year, Hanwha Ocean has won orders for 39 vessels worth approximately USD 7.87 billion, including 19 LNG carriers and LNG-FSRUs, 7 very large crude carriers, 6 container ships, 3 ammonia carriers, 1 oceangoing vessel, and 3 special-purpose vessels. This is more than double the order amount from last year (USD 3.52 billion).
The Angelicoussis Group is Hanwha Ocean's largest customer, having ordered a total of 123 ships since its first order in 1994. The amount is approximately 15 billion dollars, or a whopping 20 trillion won.
Hanwha Ocean and Angelicoussis Group have maintained a relationship that goes beyond business based on deep trust for the past 30 years. In 2022, Angelicoussis Group donated $2 million to Hanwha Ocean to use the money for the welfare of employees who gave up their summer vacation and did their best to make up for the process.
Last year, Hanwha Ocean held a ceremony to unveil a plaque with a photo of the late Greek shipping magnate John Angelicoussis, the second chairman of the Angelicoussis Group, who extended a helping hand whenever the company was in trouble, and a commemorative tree planting ceremony was held at the Geoje plant. This can be said to be an example of Hanwha's spirit of 'trust and loyalty' shining through.
The LNG carrier ordered this time is a large-scale LNG carrier with a capacity of 174,000㎥. It is equipped with Hanwha Ocean’s proud natural gas propulsion engine (ME-GI) and full re-liquefaction system (FRS), which increases fuel efficiency and reduces pollutant emissions compared to existing LNG carriers. In addition, Hanwha Ocean’s smart energy-saving system, such as the Air Lubrication System (ALS) and Shaft Generator Motor System (SGM), will be applied with the latest eco-friendly technologies.
A Hanwha Ocean official said, “Our 30-year partnership is based on our trust in the shipyard’s technological capabilities,” and added, “We will repay them by building ships of the highest quality.”
