[뉴스스페이스=이승원 기자] 한국형 위성항법시스템(KPS) 1호기가 2029년 9월 우주로 향한다. 당초 2027년 12월로 예정됐던 첫 위성 발사가 20개월 연기된 결정이다. 이는 항법탑재체 시스템의 설계·개발 난이도와 신뢰성 확보를 위해 추가 검증 기간이 필요하다는 전문가 평가에 따른 것이다. KPS 사업, 세계 7번째 독자 위성항법시스템 도전 KPS 사업은 한반도 인근에 초정밀 위치·항법·시각 정보를 제공하는 독자 위성항법시스템을 구축하는 국가 프로젝트다. 미국, 러시아, 유럽연합(EU), 중국, 인도, 일본 등 6개국만이 보유한 첨단 인프라로, 한국은 2022년부터 약 3조7000억원을 투입해 2035년까지 총 8기의 위성을 순차적으로 발사할 계획이다. 이로써 세계 7번째 독자 위성항법시스템 보유국에 도전한다.
